Sue Cook

BA Hons Fine Art Painting, MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking
Susan is a painter and printmaker with her practice being process led.
Painting predominantly in oil paint and acrylic, Susan’s work develops through the tension created between the paint and her use of materials such as tape, thread and varnish. In Susan’s practice she hopes to explore the possibilities and limitations of the materials by brushstrokes and through the process of adding and removing. The occasional use of stitch has been used to reinvent discarded material and to bring with it new life.
The work develops from and references an interest in the landscape and natural/organic forms and the need to create a sense of open space and life’s fragility and unpredictability. Although firmly linked to the history of art Susan’s practice hopes to reinvent and make relevant a more contemporary way of working.
Working towards abstraction questions the legitimacy of the subject and its significance. In Susan’s practice of working with a 2D image she hopes to develop both a sense of space and depth whilst containing a linear quality through the use of stitch or drawing.
