Beryl Desmond
My practice is based on the thematic continuum and investigates the relationship between architecture and space.
Drawing on location, I record my initial responses to the subject in a drawing book. Later my paintings are developed using a vibrant colour palette, which complements the energy of my mark making. My creative process allows the work to reflect the honesty and history of its making, from the initial drawing on site through to the developed paintings and plays an important part in my practice
Painting and drawing are equally important to me and I aim to take drawing beyond its preparatory and representational roles and give it an authenticity and autonomy. I explore the freedom of drawing with my eyes closed and by negating the critical eye, questions are posed concerning the significance of the resulting marks and how they are read.
These influences feed into my paintings and can be seen as a fusion of memory and the actual, resulting in energetic mark making that encourages the subject to teeter between reality and abstraction.
I paint and repaint and in this way I build up layers until the resulting work sits comfortably between the past and present marks. I therefore invite the viewer to seek the subject’s essence, rather than to seek a literal interpretation for the artwork.
Having graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art from Bath Spa School of Art and Design in 2011, I now work in my studio at 44AD, the contemporary artspace in the centre of Bath.
