‘THE ART OF THE BRAIN’ - A SCI-ART COLLABORATION BETWEEN STEPHEN MAGRATH & RESEARCHERS AT DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY & PHARMACOLOGY
The artworks here represent a selection of visual art responses I have made to my experience of learning about brain function and dysfunction from researchers in this field at the University of Bath.
Over the last year I have had the privilege to visit the laboratories and talk with scientists in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. They are researching the brain to find treatments for anxiety/depression, dementia, epilepsy and drug addiction. The captions next to these pictures have been provided by the appropriate researcher who chose an image which related to their specialisation.
This collaboration was funded by the University of Bath Public Engagement Unit to raise awareness among the local community of the high quality brain research conducted at the University. Working together with the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institute, the project incorporated an exhibition (from which these artworks were selected), a public lecture on brain communication and a children's workshop about brain function.
Over 400 people attended at some point over the three weeks and much conversation was stimulated about the brain and mental health issues. We hope this display will also increase awareness of research into these conditions which affect so many people personally or as carers.
