Mark Elliott Smith

2006 BA (Hons) Fine Art University Plymouth
Prompted by a collection of my childhood drawings; my work presents a playful approach to the monsters of the imagination. My earlier self is revisited and explored as a site of already ongoing enculturation.
By dramatically increasing the scale of my original felt tip drawings, and representing chance actions in a controlled, deliberate and highly finished way, the process of painting reveals and amplifies previously hidden information, both visual and psychological.
The result is an interaction between the abstract and the surreal. The combination of spontaneity and control, chaos and precision extracts and re-presents the lost and found on an epic scale.
My work also shares visual similarities to various types of street and pop art, now described as urban contemporary.
